Online personal training means working with a real coach who builds your plan and keeps you on track, without meeting at a gym. Here's how it works, how it compares to in-person training, and how to tell if it's right for you.
How it works
Every coach runs it a little differently. With me, through Forged Axis, it looks like this:
- Apply. A few questions about your goals, schedule, training history and any injuries.
- Get your plan. I build your training program and set your calories and macros around your life.
- Train with the app. Every workout, set and meal goes into Forged Axis, so I see what actually happened, not just what you remember.
- Check in and adjust. Regular check-ins and messages. Your program and macros change as your results come in.
Online vs in-person training
An in-person trainer is great for learning technique face to face. But you pay for an hour of someone's time a few times a week, and the rest of the week is on you. Online coaching flips that: less time side by side, more attention to everything in between.
- Schedule: train whenever you want, at your own gym or at home.
- Cost: usually less per month than a few in-person sessions a week.
- Accountability: your coach sees every workout and meal you log, not just one hour.
- Form: checked through videos you send instead of in person.
Who it's best for
- You want a real plan instead of guessing.
- You've been training a while and your progress has stalled.
- You want to lose fat without losing the muscle you've built.
- You know what to do, but you want someone keeping you accountable.
If you've never lifted and want someone beside you for every rep, a few in-person sessions to learn the basics can be a good first step.
What to look for in an online coach
- A plan built for you, not the same PDF everyone gets.
- Regular check-ins where your plan actually changes based on your results.
- A way to see your data: workouts, food and bodyweight, not just a weekly text.
- Clear pricing and no long contracts.
- Fast replies when you have a question.
Is it worth it?
If you've been consistent but stuck, or you keep starting over, a coach saves you a lot of wasted time. If you're happy running your own plan, the free programs and the Forged Axis app might be all you need.
